A salon in Google search

July 24, 20264 min read

When someone looks for a stylist, they do not open a search engine to read websites. They open a map, type stylist and the name of the area, and look at what is nearby.

That means most of a salon's visibility is decided in one place that costs nothing, and which many have never finished setting up.

The profile comes before the website

A Google business profile is what appears at the side or on the map: name, address, hours, phone, photos and reviews.

For a salon that matters more than a website, and the reason is simple. Someone choosing a stylist wants to know where it is, whether it is open and what the work looks like. All of that is in the profile and visible without a single click.

A website is useful, but it comes after. If you are choosing where to spend an hour, spend it on the profile.

What usually never gets done

Inaccurate hours are the worst mistake, because they send people to a locked door. On top of that, Google demotes profiles with inaccurate details.

Holidays are almost never entered, though they can be. A salon closed for a holiday while Google says it is open gets an angry person at the door and a bad review.

An imprecise category. A hair salon and a barbershop are not the same thing, and people search differently.

Photos that are old or missing. A profile without photos looks abandoned, even when the salon works perfectly.

No booking link. If there is a way to book, it belongs in the profile, because that is where the decision is made.

Reviews decide more than anything else

The number and average of reviews are what most influences which of three salons on the same street someone picks.

There is no trick. Reviews come from asking happy people, at the moment they are happiest, which is right after the haircut.

What does not pay off is buying reviews or writing them yourself. It gets noticed, and it is generally punished with lost visibility, which is worse than having few honest reviews.

Bad reviews cannot be deleted, but they can be answered. The reply often matters more than the review, because everyone who comes later reads it. A calm answer to an angry review leaves a better impression than ten compliments.

What content can and cannot do

Articles on a website do not help you appear in a search for a stylist in your area. That is decided by proximity, the profile and reviews.

Content works elsewhere: on the questions people type when they are not looking for a specific salon but for a solution to a problem. That is valuable if you sell something to a wider circle of people, and less so if you are one salon working in your own neighbourhood.

For a salon the honest order is: profile and reviews first, then photos of work, and only then articles.

Name, address and phone must match everywhere

This sounds like a detail and it is not.

If the salon's name is written with an addition in one place and without it in another, if the address appears two ways or the phone in two formats, Google cannot connect them with confidence.

A practical rule: write down once what the salon is called, where it is and what the number is, then copy that everywhere it appears. Instagram, profile, website, identical to the letter.

What this does not solve

Honestly: a tidy profile does not fix a bad haircut or a bad location. Proximity still decides most, and nothing can be done about that.

Also, visibility brings someone to the door but does not solve what happens next. If they cannot book or nobody answers a message, you have gained a profile view and nothing else.

What you realistically gain is being found by people already looking for a stylist in your area. That is the cheapest source of new clients there is, and the only one that works while you sleep.

FAQ

Does a salon need a website?

Less than people think. A Google profile with accurate details, photos and reviews does most of the work. A website helps, but it comes second.

How do I get more reviews?

Ask for them, from happy clients and at the right moment, straight after the service. Do not buy them or write them yourself, because it gets noticed and does more harm than good.

Can I delete a bad review?

No, unless it breaks the rules. But you can reply, and the reply often matters more than the review itself, because everyone who comes later reads it.
